Polycarbonate Sheet From Covestro LLC Protects And Preserves Berlin Wall Relic

Pittsburgh, PA /PRNewswire/ - Nearly 30 years ago, the fall of the Berlin Wall put an end to the political divide in Germany. A piece of this iconic structure, which once drew people apart, is now bringing them together at the German Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., both of which are home to a Berlin Wall installation.

An enclosure surrounds the relic, helping to protect and preserve its original appearance. The German Society of Pennsylvania found Makrolon® abrasion resistant (AR) polycarbonate sheet from Covestro LLC to be the ideal material to guard the Berlin Wall relic from the elements, breakage and vandalism. This abrasion- and UV-resistant material provides clarity that enables visitors to easily view the artifact, as well as durability and long-term weather resistance to help maintain graffiti on both the East and West sides of the wall.

"We have a long-standing relationship with Covestro, and trusted their team of technical experts to help us find the best material for the Berlin Wall relic enclosure," said Anton Michels, president, German Society of Pennsylvania. "With superior mechanical and chemical qualities compared to alternatives such as acrylic or glass, Makrolon® AR polycarbonate sheet was the obvious choice."

In addition to material selection, Covestro also provided guidance on cutting, joining and designing the aesthetically pleasing enclosure, which offers 360-degree sightlines without frames.

"Through our collaborative efforts with the German Society of Pennsylvania, we helped create a protective enclosure to showcase an integral piece of German history," said Ken Schwartz, global segment manager, construction, Polycarbonates, Covestro LLC. "Makrolon® AR polycarbonate sheet made it possible to design and fabricate a cost-effective, custom enclosure on-site, all while providing ventilation to eliminate condensation during wet and/or humid weather."

The German Society of Pennsylvania unveiled the permanent Berlin Wall installation on the Joseph Leidy Terrace late last year. The Society plans to enhance the installation by placing the relic on a rotating platform, which will be coordinated to a video and audio presentation on German history. A piece of the Berlin Wall is also on display for a minimum of three years at the German Embassy, owned by the German-American Heritage Foundation.
