ANAHEIM, Calif- Plastics Color Corp. (PCC), a leading supplier of color concentrates and additive masterbatches for the plastics industry, has expanded its line of additives and toner packages for modification of polylactic acid (PLA) for food and beverage packaging. The new SoluPLAsTM line of additive concentrates and masterbatches deliver significant improvements in clarity and impact, positioning PLA for broader market use. The company made the introduction at the 2011 Plastec West exhibition here (Booth #3947) Feb. 8-10.

"Our new line of additive solutions are designed to enhance the physical properties and aesthetics of PLA, thus imparting enhanced functionality and the potential for PLA to be considered for a much broader range of applications," explained PCC Director of Development Tim Workman. "PLA can now be modified to meet specific manufacturing needs."

Corn-based PLA biopolymers have enjoyed strong growth as a sustainable option for traditional hydrocarbon-based thermoplastics such as polyesters, polyolefins, polystyrene, and cellulosics. However, they suffer from performance limitations in terms of impact and aesthetics. Addressing these issues is PCC's new line of SoluPLAs additive solutions including impact modifiers, mold release agents, denesters, UV absorbers, anti-static agents, and toners.

Specifically, SoluPLAs additives offer significant improvement in terms of impact resistance and clarity compared to competing products for injection molding and extrusion applications.

PCC's SoluPLAs additives can be formulated to meet FDA medical, pharmaceutical, and food-contact requirements. Customers with specific sustainability requirements can take advantage of custom formulations that can be developed to meet specific applications needs.
