Description:
Morthane CA-276 polymer is a linear, hydroxyl terminated polyester polyurethane designed for compatibility with a broad range of modifying polymers. It is recommended for use in audio tape constructions which require urethane/modifier polymer blends to achieve optimal mechanical properties. Morthane CA-276 polymer offers:
  • Flexible coatings.
  • Good adhesion.
  • Use with high levels of non-urethane modifiers.
Solubility Properties:
CA-276 polymer is soluble in THF, cyclohexanone (CHO), and CHO/MEK (70/30 blends).
  • THF and cyclohexanone are the primary solvents for Morthane CA-276. The polymer is partially soluble in MEK.
  • DMF and pyridine also are active solvents.
  • All other solvents only can be considered as diluents.
  • At 20% solids, no more than 20% diluent is advisable.
  • At 15% solids, the maximum diluent should be approximately 25%.
  • Cyclohexanone produces relatively higher viscosity solutions than THF and increases dissolving times.
  • Relatively high concentrations of MEK can be used with CHO to reduce viscosity, drying time, and solvent cost.
Compatibility Properties:
Compatibility of Morthane CA-276 with other resins was determined by observing the cloudiness or haziness of dry films spread on a glass plate from solutions in THF at 20% solids. Materials which are compatible up to a 50/50 ratio include most other polyester polyurethanes, phenoxy resins, post chlorinated PVC, carboxylated PVC, PBDC, and nitrocellulose. Other resins found to be compatible with Morthane CA-276 at lower ratios include cellulose acetate butyrate (95/5), some polyester resins (70/30), and phthalate plasticizers (90/10).
