Beringer LLC announced a significant upgrade to their line of manual screen changers. Beringer has developed and patented a new pressure activated seal system, designed to achieve reliable leak-free operation up to 10,000 psi operating pressure and 600°F.

"The difference is in the ability to protect the pressure ring from mechanical forces encountered during normal operation," reports Don Macnamara, Beringer's Director of Sales and Marketing. "The Auto-Seal system, which is unique to Beringer and successfully employed in our Ultra-Lock line of hydraulic screen changers, effectively protects against ring deformation and shrinkage problems, which are common causes for seal failure on other manual screen changers," he continued.

Macnamara explained that the patented system encloses a polymeric pressure ring within a hardened steel seal. Melt pressure is dynamically transmitted through the specially shaped ring to the seal assuring lead free operation for virtually all extrusion melt applications.

"Over a year ago, we retrofitted an Auto-Seal into a manual screen changer running polycarbonate at 560-570 °F. The machine has run without a single problem and the seals have been bone dry," he said. "Additionally, the customers ran a fully flighted screw past the pressure ring. This could never have been done on another manual changer without causing seal failure. The screw flights would tear out an unprotected ring," Macnamara explained.

He added that the Beringer Auto-Seal design invites a fully flighted screw tip extension to within one-half inch of the breaker plate. "Doing so improves flow through the screen changer by reducing polymer inventory and associated problems caused by slow flow along the bore walls," he stated.

"The design enhancements are the result of Beringer's close communication with processors. They come to us with applications problems because they know we have the R & D expertise to solve the problem for them cost effectively," Macnamara concluded.

Benefits Extend Beyond Auto-Seal

Beringer Manual screen Changers operate with a simple swing of the hand l ever. No line disconnection has to occur; clean screens are quickly brought on line during routine shutdown and full production is reestablished in moments.

Beringer's heavy duty hand lever handle is ergonomically designed and provides easy slide plate shifts. Breaker Plate design maximizes useful screen area and minimizes pressure drop. And the integral slide plate/handle design allows swing-out slide plate removal for easy access to changer internals. Easy changer disassembly means cleanout can be done quickly and efficiently.

Beringer Manual Screen Changers are available in model sizes ranging from 1" ( 30mm ) to 4-1/2" ( 120mm ). Optional features include: adapters to up- and downstream apparatus; co-extrusion backflow screen retention; and heater power leads with male plug ends.
