Corrosion Resistance. IDM-200 easily withstands corrosive agents such as polycarbonates, PVC, clear resins and flame retardants. There are two basic reasons:
- The alloy is extremely high in nickel (>72%).
- The barrel is virtually devoid of free iron dilution, thus eliminating the greatest point of vulnerability to chemical attack in bimetallic barrels. This advantage traces to the remarkable speed of the Interfusion casting technology. As the alloy lining material is molten for mere seconds, there is virtually no apportunity for free iron to migrate from the backing cylinder into the alloy.
It is important to note that IDM-200 is in a totally different class than the "all-purpose" barrels that are standard throughout the rest of the industry. Since these products use iron/boron alloy linings that are relatively low in chromium, they provide only limited abrasion resistance with virtually no protection at all from corrosion.
