Bayer MaterialScience Begins Production Of CASE Polyols

Using State-of-the-Art Continuous IMPACT Process at Channelview, Texas, Site

Salt Lake City, UT — Bayer MaterialScience announced that production and shipment of Arcol® PPG-2000 polyether polyol using its state-of-the art continuous IMPACT process has begun at its Channelview, Texas, facility. This marks the first application of the continuous IMPACT process for the manufacture of CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers) polyether polyols.

According to the company, regular production of Channelview-produced Arcol PPG-2000 began July 24, 2006, and shipment to customers began in mid-August. The announcement is timely, as global polyol demand is projected to grow while supply for various grades of these specialty polyols appear to tighten, notes Craig Caputo, Vice President Product Management Polyols, NAFTA for Bayer MaterialScience.

"By investing in our Channelview manufacturing site - which is Bayer"s largest polyol site - Bayer MaterialScience is positioned to support the market while simultaneously providing a product that comes with all of the advantages of the innovative, continuous IMPACT technology," said Caputo.

Arcol PPG-2000 polyol, a 2,000-molecular-weight diol, is used in a broad range of applications, including construction adhesives, windshield sealants and specialty foams.

The continuous IMPACT process provides a very high level of product quality while increasing product consistency relative to KOH grades. Furthermore, not only does this proven technology reduce waste from the manufacturing process, but it is also the safest method for producing polyether polyols.

This announcement underscores Bayer MaterialScience"s dedication to finding innovative solutions that meet customer needs. "The bottom line is that we are committed to the CASE market, and investing in technology that continues to raise the industry bar for polyol quality - the quality that our customers require," Caputo concluded.
