GF Piping Systems' New Metal-To-Plastic Transition Fittings Provide Strong, Leak-Proof Seals

Tustin, CA - GF Piping Systems' new DoubleSafe transition fittings are designed to provide a leak-proof seal and prevent cracking under high torque when transitioning between metal piping systems and the company's Schedule 80 plastic piping systems. Metal-to-plastic joining is especially useful when tapping a plastic piping system to connect heat exchangers, flow meters, and other metal-ended, male-threaded instruments. Such joints are also used to expand old metal systems with plastic and to install new plastic systems where metal is required for only part of the installation.

The new fittings were developed to address the problem of plastic pipe splitting caused by over-tightening metal threads into plastic fittings. To solve this problem, each DoubleSafe fitting incorporates a female-threaded metal insert molded at high pressure inside a spigot-end plastic body. This allows the installer to connect the metal system to the metal side and the plastic to the plastic side. Users are assured of metal-to-plastic joining without splitting the pipe and save on labor and material costs that would otherwise be required if a split occurs.

The DoubleSafe fittings feature an industry-first double o-ring design that ensures a tight seal for leak-free operation.

During service, temperature changes cause the metal insert to expand and contract at a different rate than the plastic. When temperatures are extreme, this difference can create a gap between the plastic fitting body and the metal insert, potentially causing a leak. The double o-rings prevent this from happening by compressing and expanding as needed, ensuring a tight seal.

"While there are other products on the market for metal-to-plastic transitioning, to our knowledge, none feature this innovative double o-ring design, which provides exceptional protection against leaks," explains Chris Stvartak, GF Piping Systems Product Manager.

The new DoubleSafe(TM) fittings are designed for use with GF Piping Systems' Schedule 80 piping systems, which are available in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride). Pressure-rated at 150 psi, the fittings are available in four material combinations for PVC or CPVC transitioning to either 316 stainless steel or brass in sizes from ½" through 2".

PVC and CPVC systems will not rust, scale, pit, or corrode and are extremely lightweight. Their high chemical and corrosion resistance properties provide a durable solution for a variety of applications including chilled water systems, chemical processing, industrial plating, chemical drainage systems, hot water systems, hot acid distribution, and waste systems. The PVC and CPVC Schedule 80 piping systems meet ASTM D1784 requirements with a cell classification of 12454-B for PVC and 23447-B for CPVC, and are acceptable for potable water under NSF Standard 61.
