PRO-SCAN gauging systems are designed for flat sheet processes exceeding 0.1 mm. High precision profile sensors used in combination with air suspended heads and high precision linear bearings guaranty optimum results. The on-line measurement of the cross sectional profile using non-contact sensing system that allows accurate measurement of the profile even to the absolute edge of the sheet.

System Description
The gauging principle utilizes the latest air cushion gap technology and non-nuclear sensing equipment. The sheet profile is probed by two sensors which scan across the sheet by the use of DC motors. The thickness is measured by calculating the distance between the two sensing devices. A constant distance between the sensors is maintained ensuring no contact. Once the measurement head changes direction a cross sectional profile is displayed on a color monitor. To compensate for variation in width the scanning system measures the sheet edge by the use of infrared sensors, which are updated continuously.

Additional Features
To aid in the efficient set up the sophisticated software has the function of measuring the profile in length direction at any point on the extruded sheet width. PRO-SCAN also offers a hardware output for an audible alarm for excessive profile deviation, interface links to die control system or customers own data base system. The system will also produce a hard copy of the displays.

Profile Measurement Principle
To measure the profile the system moves across the sheet two air suspended profile measurement sensors. Thickness variation on the sheet compresses the air cushion, which lifts the measurement heads until they find an equilibrium point. This movement is measured by a DIADUR incremental glass scale and converted by the computer into an absolute thickness measurement. This principle is completely self-calibrating and independent from different material types.

Version 1
The measurement heads are mounted in a chassis which runs between parallel mounted high precision linear bearings driven by a DC motor
