Application Note: Feeding Activated Carbon To City Water Treatment
Activated carbon (AC) filtration is most effective in removing organic contaminants from water. Organic substances are composed of two basic elements, carbon and hydrogen. Because organic chemicals are often responsible for taste, odor, and color problems, AC filtration can generally be used to improve aesthetically objectionable water as well as remove chlorine. Activated carbon filtration is recognized by the Water Quality Association as an acceptable method to maintain certain drinking water contaminants within the limits of the EPA National Drinking Water Standards.
The customer's requirements were to reduce contaminants to acceptable standards. Those contaminants included: Organic Mercury, Arsenic, Chromium Complexes, Inorganic Mercury, Benzene, Endrin, Lindane, Methoxychlor, Toxaphene, Trichloroethylene, Paradichlorobenzene, Dichloroethylene, and Trichloroethane.
The customer contacted Schenck AccuRate for suggestions on improving the metering and monitoring of activated carbon going into their process. After testing the customer's materials in the Schenck AccuRate test lab a system was recommended that included the following equipment:
- SacMaster® DHL Stainless Steel Bulk Bag Discharger with Explosion Proof Motorized Hoist and Trolley
- Dust Collector
- MECHATRON® "MC" Explosion Proof Loss-in-Weight Feeder
- Refill Hopper
- Eductor
The process begins with water being piped through the eductor while the MECHATRON® loss-in-weight feeder continuously meters the powdered activated carbon at a specific setpoint into the extension hopper of the eductor. The powdered activated carbon mixes with the water in the eductor, which creates a slurry mix of water and activated carbon. This liquid slurry mix is then carried through piping to the injection point on the main raw water line for filtration and purification.
With the use of the MECHATRON® feeder, the water treatment facility is now able to accurately document the amount of powdered activated carbon being metered into their process on a day-to-day operational basis, which effectively has led to maintaining the city's water quality standards.
